What is mental conditioning?

Our brain weighs only 0.2% of body weight but it consumes 20-30% of body energy. Another human body system which guzzles the body energy is our digestive system. Brain consumes so much energy that if our brain was to operate in energy consuming mode, the rest of the body would suffer due to lack of available energy. That's the reason our brain operates on two modes: conscious and subconscious mode.

The subconsicous mode is brain's energy saving mode. More than 95% of our day activities are managed in subconscious mode. In subconscious mode, our brain consumes the energy at basal rate of approx 20%. The subsconsious mode operates on mental conditioning. The subconsious mode allows our body and mind to perform daily chorus without much thinking and processing in the enery saving mode.

The conscious mode is activated whenever our brain needs thinking, analysis, unstructured problem solving, focus and concentration. The brain consumes high energy upto 30% of body energy during conscious mode. The brain consumes higher amount of glucose and oxygen during the conscious mode. Our brain shifts into conscious mode during time of high performance and competition.

How right mental conditioning impacts the brain performance?

NEET UG exam is a 200 minutes test in which a student is supposed to solve 180 questions on Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. NEET UG is one of the most competitive entrance test in the world in which over 22,00,000 students appear each year to score highest out of 720 marks. Higher marks in NEET UG exam allow the student to get admission on a MBBS seat in a prestigious medical college.

It is normal for most students to develop anxiety on the day of NEET UG exam. Most students can't sleep well on the previous night and many students develop disturbed bowel movements. There are reported instances where students showed signs of extreme anxiety in the NEET UG exam centre. Most students report frequent periods of brain blackouts and brain fogging leading to silly and avoidable mistakes.

The timing of NEET UG exam which is always between 2 PM-5.20PM adds to the altered brain conditioning. The students generally miss their lunch on the day of NEET UG exam because they are supposed to report at the exam centre before 1.30 PM. So their body is deprived of fresh glucose intake and on top of it, the brain embarks on a high energy consumption mode due to anxiety and performance pressure.

Tips to develop right mental conditioning for NEET UG exam.

It is important to attempt NEET UG exam in the subconscious mode. The effort shall be to maximize the time when the brain operates in subconscious mode and minimize the time when conscious mode is activated. This is possible only if our brain remains relaxed and free from anxiety. A student must learn to regulate the activation and deactivation of conscious brain mode during the NEET UG exam.

This regulation requires practice and conscious efforts at least 90 days before the scheduled date of NEET UG exam. The practice is essential to develop conditioning and to identify the signs of conscious brain activation. Also the student must learn to optimize the brain energy reserves (BER) during the NEET UG exam so that the brain operates optimally during the entire duration of test.

The student must develop and follow a routine which will allow optimization of brain energy reserves during the 2 PM-5.20 PM period. The availability of adequate brain energy reserves along with ability to regulate the activation and deactivation of conscious brain mode will enhance the performance during the exam. NEET UG is not only an exam of academic preparation but also a test of your mental performance.

Secret hacks to optimize mental conditioning during NEET UG exam.

Here are few things that will allow the optimization of mental conditioning and brain energy reserves during NEET UG exam. It is important to understand that it takes around 90 days to develop a mental conditioning, therefore it is imperative that the student must start these practices as daily routine at least 90 days before the scheduled date of NEET UG exam.

1. Wake up between 7AM- 8AM: waking up earlier than 7AM will lead to brain fatigue and sleepiness during 2PM-5.20PM. Waking up later than 8AM will lead to drowsiness during that period. Moreover if you will wake up at 8AM, you will be able to finish your breakfast by 9.30AM allowing your digestive system sufficient time to digest the breakfast before you start your journey to exam centre.

2. Sleep for 7-8 Hrs daily: Many students skip the sleep time to increase their study hours. Compromising on your sleep is not an effective strategy. Sleep is essential for your brain to rejuvenate and optimal brain functioning. Lack of sleep will lead to altered state of brain functioning. So you must hit the bed latest by 12 Midnight so that you can wake up between 7AM- 8AM. You must sleep in one session. Afternoon siesta breaks are strictly No.

3. Shift your lunch on fruits and juices: On the day of NEET UG exam, you will not have time to have your lunch. Moreover it is not recommended to eat lunch because you would not want your body energy to shift from brain to digestive system. Therefore it is important to develop a practice of eating easily digestable high glucose rich fruits and juices in the lunch. That will allow availability of adequate glucose in the body for brain energy reserves.

4. Start practice/ mock test everyday between 2PM-5.20PM: It is important to develop the right mental conditioning at the defined time period. This will avoid development of exam induced anxiety. If you will engage your brain in a practice test everyday between 2PM-5.20PM in the simulated exam environment, your brain conditioning will ensure that your brain will operate on subconscious mode even on the day of NEET UG exam.

5. Learn and practice deep breathing: Your brain will require only glucose and oxygen for maintaining brain energy reserves. While glucose will be supplied by the liver, the oxygen requirement shall be met through inhalation. It is normal that while performing a high focus task, our breathing gets slower and shallower. In normal routine we take 12-15 breaths per minutes with 350-500ml air inhalation per breath.

In NEET UG exam, a student's breathing may slow down to 8-12 breaths per minutes with 200-350ml of air inhalation. This drop of oxygen intake will have direct impact on your brain energy reserves. It is important to practice deep breathing to enhance the diaphragm capacity. During the NEET UG exam, a conscious deep breath after every 20 minutes will be sufficient to maintain required oxygen levels for optimal brain energy reserves.
